Hi, I am Mayumi
- I walked away from science to study something more elusive :
“ the light that lives in people when they finally feel seen."
At 35, I made the kind of decision that frightens and liberates in equal measure. After twelve years in Plant Genetics research, I walked away from everything I had built — not out of recklessness, but out of a quiet, unshakeable knowing. Photography was calling me. And I had learned, by then, that some callings cannot be ignored.
That was twelve years ago. Since then, I have dedicated my life to a single, sacred belief: that every person — every single one — carries a beauty that deserves to be witnessed.
I photograph everyday people. People who arrive nervous, unsure, perhaps never having felt truly seen. And something happens in that space between us — a trust, a tenderness, a permission to simply be. I watch walls come down. I watch shoulders soften. I watch people remember themselves. I watch their confidence flourish in front of my lens and their faces light up when they hold their portraits for the first time — that is my greatest joy. My deepest honor.
To me, a portrait is not an image. It is a door — to recognition, to celebration, to the truth of who you are when no one is asking you to be anything else. I call my work portraits from the heart because the most powerful photograph is not the one you see. It is the one you feel.

Portraiture at the Highest Standard
Mayumi started her photography career in 2014 and in 2017 she entered the international accreditation program with The Portrait Masters. An international accreditation program explicitly for portrait photographers and a recognition of ‘high professional standard’ which ensures that clients are working with the true professionals of the industry. Through her accreditation journey Mayumi has been awarded multiple silver and bronze awards and has been placed in the top 20 with several entries in the contemporary, family and boudoir categories. Since 2022, Mayumi is an accredited Fellow Portrait Photographer and one of the 26 photographers worldwide to hold a Fellow status with The Portrait Masters.
